　　Laurence Fishburne在剧中扮演南非已故前总统纳尔逊-曼德拉（Nelson Mandela）。该剧素材来源于两本书，其中一本由曼德拉本人所著。「马迪巴」原本是曼德拉所属腾布王朝（Thembu）的一个部落，后来被用于曼德拉的尊称。该剧重点描述曼德拉如何在南非实现种族平等和民主政治，特别是六十年代初期（他较为年轻时）的政治斗争。该剧同时将描述曼德拉身边「一些没有名气的人」的背景故事。Orlando Jones和David Harewood分别扮演非洲国民大会重要领袖奥利弗-坦博（Oliver Tambo）和沃尔特-西苏鲁（Walter Sisulu），他们伴随曼德拉开展了跨种族、跨国度的艰苦斗争，为南非废除种族隔离制度做出卓越贡献。Laurence Fishburne自称他为了演好曼德拉亲自去南非待了两个星期，与多名在曼德拉身边工作过的人进行了深入交流。Kevin Hooks执导该剧并兼任执行制片人，Michael Nyqvist参与演出。
