　　乔西和马克斯是一对聪明的兄弟，计算机编程和机器人研发是他俩共同的爱好。在小小发明家大赛上，哥俩以其共同制作的智能垃圾运输车击败了上届冠军德威拉而获得一千美元的奖励。有了资金的支持，乔西和马克斯将最近研发的智能机器人"小星"很快就制作完成。但为了能申请专利，兄弟俩约定谁也不能把这个秘密说出去，对妈妈也得保密。

　　乔西在参加贝丝同学的家庭聚会时，贝丝的美好愿望意外地将乔西爸爸的神灵招了回来。身为计算机专家的爸爸两年前死于一次事故，但乔西一直以为爸爸是自杀身亡而不能原谅他。乔西回家后发现"小星"的智能大大超出了自己计算机编程的范围。原来，乔西爸爸的神灵回来后就依附在"小星"身上。

　　从此，"小星"成了乔西家里的一员，"小星"的表现让乔西、马克斯和妈妈仿佛觉得爸爸又回到了自己的身边。然而，伍兹记者对"小星"的报道引来了机器人公司的青睐和沃尔克父子的窥视，"小星"在被沃尔克父子偷走后却反被"小星"狠狠地收拾了一顿。爸爸的神灵要走了，临走前，他把妈妈托付给了一直追求她的史蒂叔叔，乔西也最终同意了与机器人公司的合作。
