媒体大亨Oprah Winfrey将亲自演出该剧，这是她二十年来演出的第一个多集角色……毕竟这是她自己的电视网（OWN）开发并播出的节目。该剧描述一个以孟菲斯巨型教堂为核心的生活故事，典型的OWN风格。主人公Grace Greenleaf（Merle Dandridge）是一位早已看破红尘的传教士，与母亲的关系非常疏远。当她的妹妹Faith神秘死亡之后，已经离家20年的Grace决定回家查清真相。她的父亲James Greenleaf大主教（Keith David）和母亲Mae Greenleaf夫人（Lynn Whitfield）控制着一座巨型教堂，是当地的实权人物。这个家庭表面上看起来很圣洁、很虔诚，关爱彼此，忠于上帝，实际上却隐藏着许多不可告人的丑闻与秘密——贪婪、通奸、手足相残、价值冲突——他们的罪恶与错误一样曝光，后果不堪设想。
