《X Factor》(译名：英国偶像)是英国独立电视台第一台（ITV1）的歌手选拔节目，由Pop Idol发展而来, 比赛模式与美国同类节目《美国偶像》（American Idol）相若。其名称“X Factor”是指明星需要具备的“神秘因素”。英国版本由FemantMedia及经理人Simon Cowell制作，节目自推出后受到欢迎。X Factor在欧洲获得了巨大的成功，在第五季约有18万人参加海选，最终集吸引了1350万英国观众，收视率相当可观。胜出的选手将会获得一纸唱片合约以及其他的公众表演机会。
　　《英国偶像》是一档英国的歌唱选秀节目，旨在通过海选寻找歌唱新星。过去六季的选秀活动都是从8月或者9月开始一直持续到12月，这档节目是由FemantMedia和Simon Cowell联合制作的，其名称中的“X Factor”是指要成为明星所需具备的“神秘因素”。这档节目在英国的ITV电视台以及爱尔兰的TV3套均有播出，由于大获成功更是衍生出两档在ITV1套和ITV2套播出的幕后花絮节目??《The Xtra Factor》和《The X Factor 24/7》。《英国偶像》的诞生是为了代替曾经大获成功的《流行偶像》，而它已经在第二季结束之后无限期的停歇了，这主要是因为Simon Cowell希望可以推出一档自己拥用电视转播权的节目。由于两档节目内容太过于相似还一度引起法律纠纷。
　　在最初的电视海选阶段，选手面对的评委是Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh, Dannii Minogue,Cheryl Cole还有现场的观众，选手们都希望可以顺利晋级到“训练营”环节。经过近一轮的淘汰赛，评委们会给每位选手指定一种演唱风格，而那些参加决赛的选手需要通过之后才能进入到最后阶段的竞争。而在此期间，每周由歌迷投票选出他们最喜欢的现场演唱的歌手。目前已经诞生了六位冠军：Steve Brookstein, Shayne Ward, Leona Lewis, Leon Jackson, Alexandra Burke and Joe McElderry。冠军歌手的首支单曲将会准时在年末空降各大英国歌曲榜榜首，这一优良传统从2005年开始一直持续到2008年。到2010年5月，总共有15位歌曲榜冠军歌手出自这档选秀节目。新晋的《英国偶像》冠军将会和Syco Music公司签下一份价值一百万英镑的唱片合约。这里面当然包括支付给冠军的一笔现金奖励，但是绝大部分还是用来作为开发市场以及录制歌曲的费用。这档节目是整个欧洲最大的选秀节目，而且也是广受欢迎。第六季更是吸引了多达20万人参加海选，最终集吸引了1970万观众收看节目更有1000万歌迷投票。《英国偶像》的赛制已经被很多国家沿用，并在世界范围内获得成功。特别是在丹麦和荷兰，两国都已经成功的播出了两季，第三季也在计划之中。同样在意大利、西班牙、哥伦比亚、葡萄牙和印度也是广受好评。但是最初的英国版本却因为悬而未决的版权问题还未能在一些国家播出。一些北欧国家电视台就很希望能播出英国版本，但是却没能获得转播权。
